Youth Development

Youth development is a process that prepares a young person to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood and achieve his or her full potential. Youth development is promoted through activities and experiences that help youth develop social, ethical, emotional, physical, and cognitive competencies.

The active engagement of youth in sustainable development efforts is central to achieving sustainable, inclusive and stable societies by the target date, and to averting the worst threats and challenges to sustainable development, including the impacts of climate change, unemployment, poverty, gender inequality, conflict, and migration. The World Youth Report on “Youth and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), provides insight into the role of young people in sustainable development in the context of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and related frameworks. While all the Sustainable Development Goals are critical to youth development, this Report focuses primarily on the areas of education and employment, underlining the realization of targets under these Goals as fundamental to overall youth development. Issues related to other Goals—including gender equality, good health, reducing inequality, combating poverty and hunger, and action on environmental issues and climate change—are also addressed briefly within the scope of the Report.

Pakistan is one of the youngest countries in the world. According to the Pakistan National Human Development Report, 64% of the population is under the age of 30 and around 29% is between the ages of 15 and 30.

Pakistan has got Vision 2025, SDGs 2030, National Youth Policy, Kamyab Jawan Program of Federal Government, Sindh Youth Policy, etc. but the implementation of these laws and policies with true spirit are very much needed.

LRF is committed to empowering youth by supporting efforts to increase knowledge enhancement on policy making, social justice, peace building, and human rights. LRF work to ensure young people from different background have equal access to knowledge pursue their career and to promote peace, justice and good governance in Pakistan. LRF in focusing under its Youth Development Programme on:

  • Promoting Sindh Youth Policy, 2018
  • Promoting Sustainable Development Goals linked with youth
  • Supporting youth to peruse their career and focusing to join law enforcement and judicial system
  • Sensitization and capacity building of youth department
  • Capacity building of youth as peace ambassadors   

For the implementation of the Youth Development Programme, LRF has signed Memorandum of Understandings (MOUs) with the Sports and Youth Affairs Department of Government of Sindh, Criminology Department of University of Karachi, School of Law of Hamdard University Karachi, Urdu University Karachi, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto University of Law (SZABUL), Sindh University Jamshoro, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur and many degree colleges and law colleges. LRF has also developed working relationships with excluded youth and other key stakeholders to ensure that ‘equal opportunities exist for all youth to participate in Pakistan’s social, political and economic development processes so that all youth feel an empowered part of society in future.

Highlights

  • LRF translated Sindh Youth Policy in Urdu and Sindhi and distributed among youth, related government offices and other stakeholders across Sindh.
  • LRF has established a Provincial Youth Committee in Sindh (PYCS) which consists of 26 (14 male and 10 female, 01transgender, 01 person with disability) in order to mobilize youth across Sindh, participate in Youth Dialogues and Training Workshops organized by LRF and become Youth Ambassadors on behalf of LRF.
  • LRF has organized 02-days capacity build of the 32 PYCS members (17 female, 13 male, 01 person with disability and 01 transgender) on governmental structures and policy making process for building the capacity of the youth leaders and equipping them with skills required to advocate for youth rights and raise their voices at the suitable platforms for meaningful youth involvement and engagement.
  • LRF organized 12 training workshops of Youth Peace Ambassadors across Sindh in which 128 youth (82 male and 46 females) participated as peace ambassador and paralegal expert.
  • LRF organized 10 Youth Caravan Dialogues across Sindh in which 1045 Youth (595 male and 450 female) were engaged who discussed their issues and suggest recommendation to the government. These dialogues were aimed to provided youth a platform where they shared youth problems and suggested solutions.
  • LRF has organized 10 Sindh Youth Policy Orientation Sessions with Youth across Sindh in which 611 (217 female & 394 male) discussed on Sindh youth policy and discussed their role in its implementation.
  • LRF organized 02 Provincial Youth Conference in Sindh in which 478 (261 male and 217 females) participated. The events were aimed at bridging the gap between key stakeholders and youth through discussion, engaging discourse and learnings over policy and practices. In these provincial conferences, the guests of honour included Mr. Mohammad Bux Bungal, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on Youth, Ms. Syeda Shahla Raza, Advisor to Chief Minister Sindh on WDD, Mr. Akhtar Bugti, and Syed Imtiaz Ali Shah, Secretary Youth Department, Mr. Nawaz Ali Shaikh, Secretary Social Welfare Department, Ms. Alia Shahid, Secretary Women Development Department, Dr. Fozia Khan, Education Department, Professor Dr. Ameer Ali Abro, Mr. Mumtaz Khaskheli, Assistant Professor Sindh University, Professor. Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Burfat, Karachi University, Dr. Qamaruddin Bohra, Hamdard University, Dr. Farhana, SZABIST. Many other representatives from colleges and excluded youth groups also actively participated.
  • LRF also mobilized 22 informal youth Groups/CBOs in Sindh to make them aware of CBOs registration laws and steps to follow. LRF engaged these CBOs in 05 Training Workshops in which in which 147 (110 male and 37 female) participated and built their capacity on benefits of the registration of CBOs.
  • LRF is currently engaging 62 youth groups to understand CVE related laws and build their capacity to make related social action projects on building peace and harmony in their respective community.
